CHAPTER 15
Murda had Sai’ back in the hood looking like she was strung out on dope. Her belly was starting to get a little bigger and she needed to go see her mother. Word on the street was that Greg was found dead on the tracks some weeks ago so she knew her mother and T’s family were back home.
Once I convinced Murda to let me go see my mother, I got my daughter ready and headed over to my mother’s house on 47th Street.
Once I made it inside my mother house, she embraced me and Efay like she hadn't seen me in years.
She scolded me about my behavior, shegrabbed Efay out of my hands and played with her for the majority of the time that we were there.
My mother cooked us a hearty meal and it felt like I hadn’t eaten in forever.
The afternoon soon turned to twilight and I knew that I had to get back to Murda’s house before he flipped out.
I hollered at her sisters for a minute then got Efay dressed so we could leave out. By the time I checked my watch, it was twelve at night. And as soon as I touched the door knob, my mother snatched my hand away, yelling at the top of her lungs.
“You will not leave my house at this time with that baby; you left without warning the first time! This time I won’t let that shit happen.”
I stood there in shock. My mother didn’t have a clue how harsh Murda could be when I disobeyed him.
“Ma, I have to leave. I will see you sometime this week,” I pleaded with her.
She wasn’t budging though. I grabbed Efay and laid her down in her bed. I wobbled over to the couch and passed out from exhaustion.
When I woke up, I hurriedly gathered my things and rushed back to Jazz’s crib where Murda had us living at for the time being. I knew I had fucked up by falling asleep and I also knew that I was going to get fucked up for not coming back last night.
It took me a little over thirty minutes to get back to Jazz’s house. When I knocked and Jazz answered, I gave her a look that said please tell me he isn’t here.
Jazz just stared at me and that confirmed that my worse fear was right behind that door.
I walked in and placed our daughter in her father’s bed and walked to confront what I knew was coming.
“Sai’ema, come over here and talk to me.”
I knew Murda was mad, but I went anyway. We sat on the back stairs. Our daughter was asleep in her father bed. Their son was kicking wildly in her belly. It was funny all the things you remembered when some bullshit was about to happen.
“Murda, feel this, yo’ son acting a fool.”
He moved his hand away.
I scooted back.
“Man, look Sai’, I told you to come back last night.”
“But Murda, I tried. My mom wouldn’t let me leave.
